Asian A.V. Club newsletter #45: Roshan Sethi & Karan Soni
You're gonna love this 'hang' with real-life couple, Roshan Sethi and Karan Soni, the director and lead actor of the crowd pleasing rom-com hit A Nice Indian Boy!
It’s always interesting to chat with a couple that works in the same industry. It’s even more fascinating when they work together on the SAME project and have figured out how to split the workload in a healthy, functional way.
Director Roshan Sethi and actor Karan Soni have proven to not only be successful creative collaborators (they co-wrote and Sethi directed the 2021 pandemic rom-com 7 Days, starring Soni and Geraldine Viswanathan) but also the first couple I’ve heard of who ACTUALLY met on the celeb dating app Raya and have been successfully together since!
Sethi now directs Soni again in the wonderfully crowd-pleasing rom-com A Nice Indian Boy. The film follows Naveen (Karan Soni), who, after years of being the single one at weddings, brings home his secret white artist boyfriend—now fiancé—Jay (Jonathan Groff) to his traditional Indian family. Cultural-comedy chaos ensues, but the real heart of the film lies in Naveen’s journey to not only accept himself but finally embrace the kind of love he’s never felt he deserved.
It's a lovely film (playing to sold-out audiences in its opening weekend). We got a chance to spend time with Roshan & Karan, where they talked about making A Nice Indian Boy, how Jonathan Groff inspired them to be “more like Groff” in life, and the joys of making films with people who look like you.
Press play below and pardon the bad lighting on my face - it’s like I decided to pull a Cher by draining the power from a small city!! I was obviously not lighting prepared!!
